Molecular Pathology

Laboratory scientist at a molecular testing bench

The Molecular Pathology Division covers genetic testing, molecular diagnostics and genomic medicine. Members work on standardising assays, building molecular testing capacity in Kenyan laboratories, and training pathologists and scientists in the interpretation of genomic results.

What this division works on

Molecular diagnostics standards

Validation guidance and standard operating procedures for PCR, sequencing and other molecular assays.

Cancer and inherited disease genomics

Genomic testing for tumours and inherited conditions, and how those results are reported to clinicians.

Infectious disease genomics

Pathogen sequencing, genotyping and genomic surveillance of antimicrobial resistance.

Capacity and training

Training pathologists, scientists and technologists in molecular methods and result interpretation.

What the division covers

  • PCR based testing for infections, including viral load
  • Hereditary cancer testing, such as BRCA1 and BRCA2
  • Tumour molecular profiling to guide targeted therapy
  • Pharmacogenomics
  • Sequencing and bioinformatics
  • Quality assurance for molecular methods
Why it matters in KenyaMolecular methods are moving from research into routine care in Kenya. Genomic data from African populations is still limited, which makes local expertise, sound standards and ethical practice especially important.
